The image of the Red Curtain further pushes the boundary of public vs private, the performer and viewer, and the seen and the unseen by focusing only on the boundary. The image itself is a red curtain, typically used for theaters to create a barrier either before, during, or after the show. The motif of the drapery begs the question “what is happening behind there?”. The red barrier taken out of its origin and into a public situation begins to take one of the previous questions further. “Am I the viewer or am I performing?”. Within the context of a busy intersection of Canal and Hudson (a main junction to exit or enter the city) the piece acts as a reminder of the performative aspects of road rage, city life, and deeper into their daily lives. Furthermore, the MFA students of Hunter College will also understand the relationship with the world outside of our studio building by reflecting on the barrier that metaphorically separates us from the street.
